Managing from First-Hand Experience
People who work for a company, regardless of the position they hold, are looking for ways to get ahead or advance in their careers. They want to improve their life that is why they are looking into getting a promotion. So, how does one get promoted?
For a restaurant employee to be promoted to a managerial position, he must have the proper education, enough experience and relevant skills. One of the most important skills that a manager should possess is people skill. A manager will need to supervise not just the operation of the restaurant like food preparation, table setup, and the like, but as well as the way employees handle situations, deal with customers, treat and give service to customers. To be an effective manager, one must learn and master how to effectively manage people by interacting with them on an appropriate level to alleviate any apprehension or insubordination.
Another skill that a manager must possess is food handling, from purchasing the best quality supplies, cooking, preparing and discarding of wastes. The manager needs to be well-versed in the different kinds of food in the menu as well as special dishes that may not be included in the menu that customers might ask for. He must also be able to explain to inquisitive customers how the food is cooked or prepared, but without giving out the company’s trade secrets.
For example, for a manager to be effective in a restaurant in Cebu that serves all original Cebuano dishes, he must take the time to familiarise everything on the menu. So, when a customer asks for the manager, he will be able to confidently answer any inquiries.
